The main service I offer is the full behaviour support consultation package which is an in depth assessment, diagnosis and ongoing behaviour plan to remedy the unwanted behaviour of your dog. This gives you a full understanding of why your dog is behaving in a certain way and both practical and written guidance so you can work on the issue along.
A dog’s behaviour can sometimes be embarrassing, or even scary but are almost always stressful to us as well as our dog. Behaviour consultations are for dogs with issues that are based in emotions such as fear and lead to issues like phobias, reactivity or aggression.
I only see a small number of clients and ensure I give my full attention to every case. In return I ask for clients to be fully committed to implementing the changes and keeping in touch on a weekly basis with progress updates.
The way a dog behaves develops through a combination of its breed, genetics, individual personality, early learning, life experiences and any health issues. My job is to put together all the different pieces of the puzzle which tell me your dog’s story, so we can work together to create a plan to improve their behaviour.
My advice is tailor made for you and your dog and is firmly backed by expert science based knowledge. My recommendations are laid out in an easy to follow manner and with clear explanations. I will always explain the reasons for these recommendations and ensure you are on board with them. There is no point in me suggesting something that doesn't make sense or is not workable in your day to day life!
It is important to be sure that the behaviourist or trainer you see is qualified to help you. At the moment the industry is not regulated and many 'behaviourists' have done nothing more than a weekend course (or worse no qualifications at all). Many accreditations are little more than a paid for badge. Please feel free to ask about my qualifications & experience if you have any worries.
I don't believe in quick fixes. I only use ethical methods of behaviour modification to modify your pets underlying emotional state. Many dogs are punished for problem behaviours and this may appear to work at first; for instance if you punish a dog for growling it might stop growling, but you are doing nothing about the reason for the growling. Next time your dog is in a similar situation, he has learnt that growling doesn't work, is worried about your reaction and will have no option but to escalate to a bite.
My behaviour consultation package is priced at £250. This includes:
- Comprehensive background assessment form
- 30 minute pre-visit telephone call
- 2 hour consultation
- 1 hour follow up visit
- Full written plan to take you through the whole process
- Unlimited email support for 3 months after your consultation.
Home visits beyond 10 miles from the EH14 area are charged at 45p per return mile.
A virtual behaviour package is also available and is priced at £190 with all sessions taking place via Zoom.
If you are not sure where to start then an assessment visit can give you an overview on whatever issue you are facing. I offer a 90 minute assessment to give you a diagnosis and some 'first aid' coping strategies. This might be for a new behaviour issue that has cropped up, something long term that you aren't sure can be changed or simply to get an expert eye on some unusual changes in your dog that you aren't sure is the sign of a problem.
Please note: I cannot offer full behaviour modification advice without a full consultation and vet referral. Assessments are not suitable for dogs with aggression/reactivity to strangers.
Assessment visits are the equivalent of the first hour or so of the full consultation service and can be followed up with the additional hours/sessions and the cost deducted from the full package price.
Sessions are priced at £90 for 1.5 hours and include a 1 page written summary.
Home visits beyond 10 miles from the EH14 area are charged at 45p per return mile.
This is the behaviour consultation package with more practical help as reactive dogs generally need more follow up sessions to ensure they make progress and that you as the owner have the right techniques to continue the work on your own. By reactive this means dogs who react by barking, growling or lunging at other dogs or people. It is aimed at helping manage and decrease the level of reactivity that happens when you go for a walk.
My reactive dogs package is priced at £345. This includes:
- Comprehensive background assessment form
- 30 minute pre-visit telephone call
- Initial 2 hour consultation
- 3 x 1 hour practical sessions
- Full written plan to take you through the whole process
- Unlimited email support for 6 months after your consultation.
